BE THE 5 Segment:

LovEd's Clarity Program teaches us how to be a level 5 on the Emotional Maturity (EM) Scale. Each month, we feature someone who has inspired us with their high level of EM, meaning they've chosen not to take things personally, respond reactively or approach the situation in a way that contributes to the problem.

This month, we're featuring model, actress and author Chrissy Teigen. Chrissy made TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list for 2019, and it’s for good reason: unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve certainly heard of her. She’s the co-host of the show Lip Sync Battle, is the author of two cookbooks, and is married to famous singer/musician John Legend.

“To have people that you respect, who are the best in the business, witness you at your worst is tough. Even though this was something I shouldn’t have to apologize for, I did want to apologize. Because on a set, people depend on you."

—CHRISSY TEIGEN

Post-partum

After the birth of her first child, Chrissy experienced postpartum depression - a condition that one in nine women suffer from, but so few feel comfortable talking about.

Chrissy penned an essay for Glamour Magazine where she talks about her experience. She acknowledges that she faces a lot of backlash or controversy because she’s in the public eye, but she explains that “it would feel wrong to write anything else” as it’s a large part of her life, and the lives of so many other women.

Politics

Chrissy is well-known as being vocal on social media, particularly on her Twitter profile. For Donald Trump’s birthday, she and her husband John made a public statement supporting immigrant children.

"John and I are outraged to see and hear the horror stories of immigrant families seeking asylum and refuge in America being ripped apart due to the inhumane policies of the Trump administration. These actions are cruel, anti-family and go against everything we believe this country should represent. The ACLU is committed to defending the rights and humanity of these vulnerable families."

She also noted that since the President was turning 72 years old, each member of her family was donating $72,000 to the cause.

FEMALE EMPOWERMENT

Chrissy will often tackle body image issues on social media, and despite being a swimsuit model, has no issue with addressing imperfections like stretch marks. She posted photos online after her second child to advocate for what a real, post-baby body looks like - stretch-marks and all.

Chrissy has also been vocal in prioritizing women’s issues. As she tells Glamour Magazine: “I care a lot about women's rights and making sure parents have what they need to raise healthy kids. I have always cared, but having just had a child, I know how serious it is to be a mother. It's an incredibly huge challenge. You need support. You need resources."

Chrissy goes on to explain that while she doesn’t expect the government to fix everything, she does think there’s merit in having a leader who prioritizes women’s issues, like pay equity, childcare, and reproductive health.

HER MARRIAGE

It’s no secret that Chrissy’s husband John adores her, but he does a wonderful job at tearfully describing his wife and why she’s so special during his speech at the Glamour’s Woman of the Year event in 2018. Watch the video below:

Thank you, CHRISSY TEIGEN, for being the 5 AND HAVING THE COURAGE TO SPEAK UP AND BE YOURSELF.
